The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
